St. Paul is said to have been shipwrecked on Malta, whose position in the Mediterranean has made it a strategic prize. Here, in the 16th century, the Knights of St. John repelled 30,000 soldiers of Süleyman the Magnificent's Ottoman Empire. In 1964, after almost 150 years as a British colony, the Maltese islands won independence; a decade later they became a republic within the British Commonwealth.

Tourism is the main cornerstone of the nation's economy. More than a million visitors come to
Malta each year.
